“DABANGG” takes us backward to the older times.. There is not anything original in the story it is simply similar to some other Dharmendhra or Big B old pictures in the village having a delighted finish. Even Mithun Chakaraborty has done many B class movies like this. However this picture seems like a brand new as well as cool bottle having lot of plus points where Salman’s expression is the most essential one of them… The story is concerning Chulbul Pandey(Salman khan) whose father passes away when he is two yrs old and his mother gets married to Prajapathi pandey (vinodh kanna) and they also have a child Makkhanlal pandey (Arbaaz khan). Chulbul is not very happy about how his father treats him so he decides to transform the state of affairs when he gets up on his feet. 21yrs later Chulbul becomes a cop and the full situation alters where his father does not take his decisions anymore and he does not appreciate his father anyway. the tale goes on with Makkhanlal or Makkhi being without a job but falls in love with a schoolgirl and the girls father does not support their marraige because his father asks him a enormous dowry. Simultaneously Chulbul falls in love with Rajo(Sonakshi sinha)… the story continues makki desires to get married to his girl therefore he robs his brother money and provides it to the girls father to give hs father back as dowry. He is caught by his mother in the practice but convinces her that he’ll return the money back to his brother after his marraige. Everything goes in accordance to plan but abruptly his mother dies. This alters the entire situation of Chulbul Pandey. Rajo’s father sacrifices himself to get his daughter married to Salman khan. And salman is not accepted by his father so he leaves the place and lives in the police quarters along with his wife. From here the story is about how the villain plots to use Makkhan Lal to murder his brother Chulbul Pandey…And how the hero makes back with family to bring a happy ending(this part of the story might sound kinda ordinary when you read this but believe me it is just too breathtaking while you watch it on the screen..)
Why has the Salman starrer collected more money than Aamir Khan’s `Three Idiots’ and Prakash Jha’s `Raajneeti’, which boast of far greater content? What has endeared it to the urban cinema complex viewers even though being aimed at small-town India? Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha are the lead pairs of the movie. Malaika Arora Khan also appears in a dance sequence in the movie. The answer lies within the fact that it is an modest entertainer entrenched in Indian reality, say directors Mahesh Bhatt and Sudhir Mishra. “ Dabangg (fearless) reclaimed the area that Hindi movies had ceded to Bhojpuri movies because of the metrocentric sensibility of Bollywood directors,” explained Bhatt.
Mishra, well-known for applauded movies like as `Dharavi’, `Chameli’ and `Hazaron Khwaishen Aisi’ stated, “Our directors are living in their heads in America, they are ashamed of making Hindi movies.” Whopping movies, according to him, occur from Indian reality “but of late, directors who come from Bollywood families have abdicated this area to small-town boys like as Vishal Bharadwaj, Raju Hirani and Anurag and Abhinav Kashyap.”
Bhatt stated, “Just as Indian movies was patting itself on its back for having grown up, the entire thing has been turned upside down!”.
Explaining why the urban viewers loved the picture, Bhatt said, “The sophistication of our metro viewers is skin deep. Below the exterior, we are all unabashed lovers of the `mela’, and this picture has that street party feeling. It has met that elemental appetite.”
Alankrita Srivastava, Prakash Jha’s helper whose first picture, `Turning 30′, is in post-production, went to see `Dabangg’ with her acquaintances expecting not anything more than the filmi equivalent of a `nautanki’ (folk theatre). “We went to be entertained by Salman Khan and he did not disappoint us,” she said.“Of course, there are gaps in the story as well as uncomfortable moments within the picture but no one was researching for the negatives.”
“This is not my kind of picture but I made an exemption for `Dabangg’ being a previous Salman follower. His appeal lies in the fact that he retains that unaffected and unsophisticated character of a `tapori’ (streetside ruffian),” stated Shrivastava.
Director Madhur Bhandarkar, who saw the picture at Bandra’s Gaiety theatre, stated Salman has struck a chord with the masses as well as classes with his outgoing performance. “Fans went hysterical, clapping and whistling at Salman’s lines. The last movies I saw receiving such reaction were `Gadar’ and `Lagaan’,” stated the director who shot to fame with `Chandni bar’.
Paying tribute to Salman’s proficiency and as legend, Bhatt stated, “A weak quality cannot hold a robust plot but a strong character can hold a weak plot.” Definitely, even those who panned the picture approved that Salman has played the role of a shady but lovable cop with abandon.
The charisma of the picture was that it was an unapologetic and brazen Salman starrer which went the whole hog, stated Mishra. Bhatt well-liked the solitary mindedness as well as audaciousness of the filmmaker, Abhinav Kashyap.
The pre-release advertising of the picture and the fact that it delivered what it promised — a complete Salman Khan experience — also played its part in Dabangg’s success, said Shrivastava.
However, picture critic Deepa Gahlot does not assume much of `Dabangg’ and dismisses it “a jazzed-up B-grade Bollywood picture which Mithun Chakaraborty did by the dozen”. “It is merely that this generation has grown up without watching such films.”
